“KIE SAVED ME FROM THE JAWS OF A COMMERCIAL BANK”

How a KSh 15 million facility gave Top Taste Millers room to grow

Access to affordable financing can make the difference between an enterprise struggling under financial pressure and one positioned for growth. For Top Taste Millers, a rice processing enterprise based in Makutano, Kirinyaga County, a KSh 15 million facility from Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) came at the right moment. It gave the business a chance to stabilize its operations and expand production.

The enterprise, owned by Mr. Thomas Mutugi Karunji, sits firmly within the rice value chain. It sources raw rice from local farmers and processes it through milling before supplying the finished product to the market through the local vendors. Its specialty is Pishori rice and it has established a milling capacity of approximately 60 tonnes per day.

Before the KIE facility the business was carrying considerable financial pressure from an existing commercial bank loan. The obligation had tied down its operations and limited how much it could invest in production. The KIE financing allowed the enterprise  to manage that loan and to acquire additional machinery that strengthened its milling operations. It also enabled the business to improve how it processes the by-products of rice milling.

According to Mr. Mutugi the financing brought much-needed relief and opened the way to redirect resources towards expanding the business. The new machinery has improved operational efficiency and lifted the enterprise’s production capacity. He describes KIE as a reliable financing partner and points to the affordability of its loans and the institution’s understanding of the financing challenges facing local enterprises. In his words: “Access to the facility from KIE came at a critical time for our business. We were under the jaws of a commercial bank loan and the financing enabled us to navigate that obligation and invest in additional machinery. This has improved our operations and strengthened our production capacity.”

He has a message for fellow entrepreneurs. Kenyans engaged in value addition who require financing below KSh 20 million should consider KIE. “Its financing is affordable,” he said, “and the institution has been a supportive business partner throughout our growth journey.”

The relationship looks just as healthy from the lender’s side. Speaking to the KIE Press Team, Ms. Bentah Munubi, Branch Manager of the Karatina Branch, described Top Taste Millers as one of the branch’s regular customers. She commended the enterprise for its consistent repayment record and its commitment to meeting loan obligations without delays.

The impact reaches beyond the mill itself. By buying raw rice from farmers and vendors the enterprise provides a market for locally produced commodities. It then creates additional value through processing and supplies finished products to consumers. This strengthens the local agricultural value chain at both ends.

The experience of Top Taste Millers shows how appropriate financing can help businesses overcome financial constraints and modernize production processes. It also shows how access to credit can raise productivity and widen market reach. Through its enterprise financing interventions KIE continues to support Kenyan entrepreneurs engaged in manufacturing, processing and other value addition activities. Its work in facilitating access to credit supports business expansion, industrial development and job creation.
