THREE LOANS,FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE, SEVEN YEARS OF GROWTH AND A VISION THAT KEEPS RISING WITH KIE.

A one man baking operation serving neighbors to a growing enterprise employing more than 10 workers and distributing cakes across the Coast region, Kenan Bakeries is demonstrating how access to affordable finance can transform an entrepreneur’s vision into a thriving business

Founded seven years ago by Kenneth Kagunda Wangai in Malindi, Kenan Bakeries began modestly with Wangai baking cakes for his neighbors.

His ambition to grow the business found a critical partner in Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE), whose affordable financing support enabled him to progressively expand production, create jobs and strengthen distribution.

Wangai’s journey with KIE began with a KSh 400,000 loan, which he invested in additional equipment and business expansion. The investment enabled him to improve production and recruit two more employees.

After successfully repaying the facility, he qualified for a second loan of KSh 900,000, allowing him to acquire more equipment, enhance operational efficiency and expand his workforce.

His consistent repayment record subsequently qualified him for a third facility of KSh 1.2 million providing further financing to support the bakery’s continued growth.

The three facilities, totaling Ksh 2.5 million, have helped Kenan Bakeries build a stronger production base and distribution network.

Today, the enterprise operates from its own building, employs more than 10 workers and uses four own vehicles to deliver cakes to customers across the Coast region.

Beyond the figures, the business reflects the value of an entrepreneur who has combined ambition with financial discipline and a sustained

commitment to growth.

During a visit to the bakery, Mr. Julias Change, Malindi Manager at KIE praised Wangai’s repayment record, describing Kenan Bakeries as one of his valued customers.

“For seven years, this business has been our customer and it has never defaulted on a single monthly repayment. He repays his loans diligently. You can see the growth for yourselves,” he said.

The KIE delegation included Rev. Peter Rotich, Manager, Operations and Acting Manager Marketing & PR, Ms. Matilda Mwachia, Regional Manager for the Coast Region and Mr. Julias Change, Malindi Manager.

The team was accompanied by Mr. Alex Chamwada OGW, MBS of CHAMS MEDIA , a renowned media personality.

Kenan Bakeries’ growth illustrates KIE’s role in supporting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with financing that enables them to invest in productive equipment, expand operations and create employment.

For Wangai, the journey has been one of steady progression from baking for neighbors to running a business with its own premises, a growing workforce and a regional distribution network.

For KIE, it is a tangible example of how enterprise financing, matched with commitment and responsible borrowing can help local businesses move to the next level.
